Meet & Geek: Medical Illustration
Lecture

Join us for a Meet & Geek about the history of medical illustration!
This talk will highlight Eo Trueblood, a medical illustrator at Stream Studios at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He will provide a brief overview of the history of medical illustration, from early Western examples to contemporary works, and spotlight notable historical illustrations from around the world.
Guests will get to see medical illustration projects, including patient education, surgical and clinical illustration, and various print and web applications. We'll also highlight high-profile medical moments that led to medical breakthroughs, such as the first bilateral hand transplant on a child and the separation of conjoined twins. We'll touch on AI, the limits of image search tools, and why trained medical illustrators still matter.
Speaker Bio:
Eo Trueblood is the co-founder and Studio Director of Stream Studios, the medical illustration and innovation studio at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Eo works closely with surgeons, nurses, researchers, and hospital leadership to create clear, high-impact visuals that support patient care, medical education, and research.
His illustrations appear across CHOP’s educational materials, on the covers of international medical journals and surgical atlases, and in stories featured by outlets such as NPR, CNN, the BBC, Time, Al Jazeera, and Good Morning America.
In addition to directing the studio, Eo teaches a visual communication course for medical students at the Perelman School of Medicine, focusing on how images improve understanding and patient care.
