On June 7 the Board of Trustees for the College of Physicians of Philadelphia issued the below statement supporting the steps the Mütter Museum is taking to review existing content as a critically important function for the future of the institution. The Board is comprised of respected physicians and health and medicine experts who oversee the non-profit institution.
In response to recent public expressions of concern, the Board of Trustees affirms the Mütter Museum’s continued role in the mission of the College.
In recognition of evolving legal issues and professional standards pertaining to the exhibition of human remains, the Board supports the ongoing initiatives of the College leadership to review the contents of its collections, including those located in the Library, the Mütter Museum and online.
It is imperative that the collections meet current professional standards and serve the College’s mission of “advancing the cause of health while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine.”
